When I discovered that I scheduled a visit to Florida to get away and see an old high school friend in the midst of Spring Break, I at first panicked. It would have been fun when I was a college kid, but it wasn’t exactly what I had in mind for this trip.

Clearwater Sugar Sand Festival
This is an annual tradition at Clearwater Beach, and we were lucky to be there as it was just getting under way. It attracts artists from all over the world, and we were lucky enough to see several of them putting the finishing touches on their work.
The beach’s sand is uniquely fine grained and, with a little water, lends itself to carving. This year’s theme was Sports. For more information, you can visit the Sugar Sand Festival website.

Reykjavik: This City’s Made for Walking

Apartment block Walking in the center of Reykjavik is wonderful. Driving, for the record, is not. The map apps on my phone led us through all sorts of alleyways and paths where no cars could go. Nearly all the streets are one way, and some unexpectedly dead-end onto pedestrian plazas that may have once been streets but now are wide walkways.

Golden Circle – Iceland’s Most Popular Tour

Driving the winding Golden Circle The “Golden Circle” is the very popular 140-mile loop around west central Iceland that offers a sampling of the island’s geology and history, along with some outstanding sights and a stop at one of the country’s more traditional hot springs. With stops for lunch and a couple of hours at the hot spring, usually Secret Lagoon, it’s a full nine hours. Some options include the huge, manmade Blue Lagoon between Keflavik and the airport. If time permits, both hot springs are worth trying out.

People & Portraits Portfolio

Still, my favorite way to get people pictures is by lurking in the background and capturing candid images. Candid, according to the Oxford Dictionary means “truthful and straightforward; frank” and I try to stay true to that. It can take a long time to get to know someone, but that first impression you get from an initial glance can stay with you.

Travel & Places Portfolio

Traveling has always been one of my favorite things to do and the same goes for the photography I do when I’m doing it. Everyplace has stories to tell. Sometimes they reveal something truly unique to a place and its culture. Sometimes it shows us how much we have in common as members of the human race.
With all due respect to filmmakers and videographers, I think photographers have a certain advantage here. Those tiny slices of time we capture can tell as much and sometimes more than a longer shot or scene. These brief images can be what we remember most about a place or event there. I love finding and capturing those little slices.
