It's called the "weather shot" or "feature shot" and can be the bane of a news photographer's existence. The editors always like to have somewhat timely but not particularly specific photos they can use to fill holes on the page or illustrate innane weather stories (which are also used to fill holes on a page on slow news days). Kids and the limited forms of suburban Boston wildlife were often popular subjects.

One afternoon, I was out prowling around a small reservoir near our office, thinking about finding a nice, serene shot of some of the Canadian geese who summered in Framingham. This shot materialized in my viewfinder and I hit the shutter.
